Are You Practicing Proper Ergonomics? How to Perform a Self-Assessment

Performing an ergonomic self-assessment is a proactive way to identify and address potential issues in your workplace setup. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to conduct a self-assessment and make adjustments to optimise your workspace for comfort and productivity:

Step 1: Assess Your Workstation

  1. Chair: Sit in your chair and assess its comfort and adjustability. Check if it provides adequate lumbar support and if the seat height allows your feet to rest flat on the floor or on a footrest.

  2. Desk: Ensure your desk is at a comfortable height and depth. Your elbows should be bent at a 90-degree angle when typing, and there should be enough space for your legs to move freely underneath.

  3. Monitor: Position your monitor directly in front of you at arm's length, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Adjust the height and tilt to minimise neck strain.

  4. Keyboard and Mouse: Keep your keyboard and mouse close to your body and at elbow height. Your wrists should be in a neutral position, with your forearms parallel to the ground.

  5. Lighting: Assess the lighting in your workspace to ensure it is adequate and free from glare. Position your monitor to avoid reflections and adjust overhead lighting or use task lighting as needed.

Step 2: Identify Areas of Discomfort

  1. Muscle Tension: Pay attention to any muscle tension or discomfort in your neck, shoulders, back, wrists, or arms while working. Note any areas of strain or fatigue.

  2. Eye Strain: Monitor your eyes for signs of strain, such as dryness, redness, or blurred vision. Check if your monitor brightness and contrast settings are comfortable for extended use.

  3. Overall Comfort: Assess your overall comfort level and well-being while working. Note any feelings of fatigue, stiffness, or discomfort that may indicate ergonomic issues.

Step 3: Make Adjustments

  1. Chair Adjustment: Adjust your chair height, lumbar support, and armrests to achieve optimal comfort and support. Experiment with different settings until you find a position that feels comfortable and allows for proper posture.

  2. Desk Setup: Modify your desk height or use a keyboard tray if necessary to achieve a comfortable typing position. Ensure there is enough space for your legs to move freely and adjust the desk layout to minimise reaching or stretching.

  3. Monitor Positioning: Adjust the height, tilt, and distance of your monitor to reduce neck strain and promote comfortable viewing. Use a monitor stand or riser if needed to raise the screen to eye level.

  4. Keyboard and Mouse Placement: Position your keyboard and mouse to minimise wrist strain and ensure a neutral wrist position. Consider using ergonomic accessories such as a wrist rest or ergonomic mouse pad for added support.

  5. Lighting Optimization: Adjust your workspace lighting to reduce glare and minimise eye strain. Use adjustable blinds or curtains to control natural light and position task lighting to illuminate your work area effectively.

Step 4: Take Regular Breaks

  1. Movement Breaks: Incorporate regular breaks into your work routine to stretch, move around, and rest your eyes. Use the 20-20-20 rule as a guideline: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

  2. Microbreaks: Take short microbreaks throughout the day to change positions, stretch, or perform simple exercises to relieve muscle tension and promote circulation.

Step 5: Monitor and Adjust as Needed

  1. Monitor Your Comfort: Continuously monitor your comfort and well-being while working and make adjustments as needed to maintain optimal ergonomics.

  2. Seek Feedback: Ask for feedback from colleagues or ergonomic experts to help identify areas for improvement and refine your workstation setup.

By following these steps and making adjustments based on your ergonomic self-assessment, you can create a more comfortable and productive workspace that supports your health and well-being. Remember to prioritise ergonomics and make ongoing adjustments as needed to maintain optimal comfort and performance in the workplace.
